AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL

Union Baptist School

Ouachita Parish

001707939783-union-baptist-schoolariel2019png.png

There is little information about Union Baptist School’s origin story, but it does appear clearly labeled on topographical maps from 1957, 1969, 1994, and 1999. The school is also clearly flagged in 2015 and 2018 topographical maps. There were many African American schools in Monroe, Louisiana, and Union Baptist School was one of them. Between 1999 and 2020, the school was renamed Robert E. Lee Junior High School after the Confederate States Army leader. On September 15, 2020, the school board approved the renaming of the school to Neville Junior High School.
