Plaquemines Parish

Scottville High School was one of Plaquemines Parish’s three original African American high schools along with Sunrise and Phoenix High Schools. The first graduation ceremony was held in 1957, with five female and two male students. Scottville High School closed with integration and reopened as Belle Chasse Middle School in 1971, which is still in operation today. Although some new buildings with red roofs were constructed in front of the older ones, as seen in the aerial image, many of the school’s original architectural fabric is intact. September 30, 2017 was proclaimed “Scottville High School Day” in Plaquemines Parish to commemorate the former high school and its meaning to the local community.
