Phyllis Wheatley High School opened in 1943 in Melville, Louisiana off the coast of the Atchafalaya River. The school went through many phases of being a high school, changing from Phillis Wheatley to Melville High School and then finally to Melville Elementary School. The school closed in 2010 and is currently owned by St. Landry Parish School Board.
