AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL

Mossville High School

Calcasieu Parish

Before Mossville High School opened in 1956, students in this area commuted to Lake Charles to attend school. The school educated African American students in grades 1-12 who excelled in academic and sports despite having outdated textbooks and equipment. Mossville High School closed in 1991 but remained a landmark in the small town until SASOL, a South African- based chemical and energy company, purchased the land of Mossville High to expand its company. The school was demolished in 2017 despite community wishes and now stands as a chemical plant.
