AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL

Lukeville School

West Baton Rouge Parish

1067-wbrlukeville-schoolstreet-view-22019.png

Lukeville School can trace its origins to 1887, when Reverend Luke Billups established the school for Black students. A historical marker commemorating the school and its proud history was erected in November 2005, thanks to the efforts of Principal Cynthia Thomas, the West Baton Rouge Historical Association and Historic Preservation Committee, and Brusly Councilwoman Joanne Bourgeois. Principal Thomas was born, reared, and educated in Lukeville. Although an attempt failed to place the school on the National Register of Historic Places, the historic marker was the next best option. The school is still in use as Lukeville Elementary School.
