Caddo Parish School Board was given a donation by Joseph Henry Herndon before his death in 1924 in order to establish a school for people of color
in Belcher, Louisiana. It wasn’t until 1953 when the site for the school was purchased by the school board and construction began in 1955. Herndon High School opened the following year in 1956 and survived integration. The building is extant and still in use today as Herndon Middle Magnet.
